A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
